I paid a quick visit to Mechi Badminton Club when I was in Kakkravitta, Jhapa last week. MBC with the support of their city council is building their own badminton complex. The total cost is estimated to be around 4 crores, a quarter of that coming from the local government.
MBC has started an after school "academy" for under 14 year-olds. Currently 31 kids are training daily and they are hoping a few of them develop into nationally ranked players. The club is keen on hosting high level badminton tournaments at their under-construction complex in the near future and are already organizing a regional level tournament this month.
Mechi Badminton Club's endeavors are some of the many positive stories in Nepali sports at the grassroots level. Unfortunately, initiatives such as theirs often go unnoticed and are overshadowed by the negative headlines of the squabbling and mismanagement by our top level officials. It's always good to be reminded that there are still a lot of good guys in Nepali sport.
